Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why are my teeth stained and yellow?

Stained and yellow teeth are part of the natural aging process. As you get older, the outer layer of your teeth (enamel) wears down due to biting, chewing, and brushing. That reveals the inner layer of your teeth (dentin), which is naturally yellow. The more dentin that peeks through, the yellower your teeth appear.

Other factors that increase your risk of stained or discolored teeth include:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Drinking dark beverages like coffee and red wine
  • Eating foods that stain, like tomato-based pasta sauce
  • Using tobacco

Your teeth can also become stained or yellow if you take prescription medication that contains tetracycline.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a type of cosmetic dentistry used to eradicate stains and discoloration from the surface of your teeth. It uses medical-grade solutions to bleach your teeth, improving their luster and aesthetic appearance.

The majority of modern teeth whitening treatments use carbamide peroxide, a harmless byproduct of hydrogen peroxide. Treatment is quick and pain-free and provides long-lasting results.

What are the different types of teeth whitening?

All Star Dental Care offers several types of teeth whitening, including:

KöR® chairside whitening

KöR chairside whitening can make your teeth up to eight* shades brighter in one treatment session. Before in-office whitening, your provider covers your tongue and gums with a rubber dam. Afterward, they carefully apply a bleaching gel to the surface of each tooth.

Next, your provider points a special light at the gel. This triggers a bleaching reaction that eradicates stains and discoloration. Your provider repeats this process several times until achieving your desired results.

KöR® take-home teeth whitening

KöR take-home teeth whitening allows you to whiten your teeth at your own pace. With take-home whitening, you apply a refrigerated gel to a custom mouthguard. Then, you wear the mouthguard for three to four hours each day. The whitening gel minimizes stains, restoring your teeth to their near-original bright condition.

Is teeth whitening permanent?

Yes. KöR teeth whitening is one of the only whitening treatments proven to provide permanent results. The KöR system lets your teeth absorb bleaching factors. This makes it easy to maintain your results by brushing and flossing. What’s more, you can drink your favorite beverages and eat your favorite foods, even if they cause stains.

Can I combine teeth whitening with other treatments?

Yes. All Star Dental Care regularly performs teeth whitening combined with other services, including full mouth reconstruction and smile makeovers. If you’d like to receive teeth whitening during your visit to All Star Dental Care, simply let your provider know.
